Analysis of Water Resource Demand in Shale Gas Development Shale gas is a clean and efficient unconventional natural gas resource. In recent years, with the continuous advancement of development technologies, the production of shale gas in the United States has grown rapidly, which has had a significant impact on the international natural gas market and the world's energy landscape. Therefore, major shale gas resource countries around the world have also increased their research and exploration efforts on shale gas. China has great potential for shale gas resources and a wide distribution area, which provides favorable conditions for achieving a leapfrog development.
Hydraulic fracturing technology is one of the main technologies for shale gas extraction. The water consumption for each section of hydraulic fracturing in horizontal wells is over 1,000 cubic meters, and the water consumption for a single horizontal well is over 10,000 cubic meters. It is said that "10,000 cubic meters of water and 1,000 tons of sand" are used. Then, will the large amount of water used in shale gas development have a significant impact on the local water supply security? Solving the contradiction between shale gas water consumption and industrial and agricultural production, living, and ecological water consumption is the prerequisite for the scale development of the shale gas industry.
According to incomplete statistics, the average water consumption per well in the four main shale gas fields in the United States is 11,000 to 15,000 cubic meters. However, from the proportion of water consumption in various industries in the main shale gas basins of the United States, the water consumption for shale gas extraction only accounts for 0.1% to 0.8% of the total regional water consumption. Compared with traditional municipal, agricultural, industrial, livestock, thermal power, nuclear power, conventional oil, coal gasification, coal oil shale, oil sands, bioethanol, and biodiesel industries, the water consumption for shale gas development is not large.
In addition, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Groundwater Protection Commission, compared with the water consumption of nuclear power, conventional oil, coal gasification, coal oil shale, oil sands, bioethanol, and biodiesel, the water consumption for shale gas development is the lowest. Moreover, the water consumption for shale gas development is a one-time concentrated water use, with high concentration, short duration, and low water quality requirements. It has significant differences from the continuous water use characteristics of traditional industries. Generally, it will not have a significant impact on the water supply security of the local area, and will not conflict with the water use of traditional industries.
